Meriden, Kansas- Jefferson West is still looking for a few host families in the community. Your family does not have to join the exchange. The Marquarstein group is from the German state of Bavaria, near where the Sound of Music was filmed. These students have worked for almost 18 months fundraising and preparing to come to the USA. Their host school in western Kansas has suffered a severe enrollment decline after the pandemic and was not able to accommodate the program this year and they were notified in late June.
This German-American High School program was started in partnership with the retired superintendent, Dr. Patti Bishop, son Ryan Bishop (JW Alum), and the former school principal, Mr. Jason Crawford, in 2012.
Moving forward, our programs will rejoin together and offer more opportunities for Jefferson West students seeking US State Department support grants, high school credit opportunities, and a deeper cultural experience moving forward with our partner schools, Bebra and Marquarstein. The students are very excited to have this experience and grateful for the families that have reached out to help them in the 11th hour.
If you have the ability to just host a student in your home for the two weeks they are here, please reach out to Mr. Crawford at jason.crawford@usd340.org. You do not have to have a student participating in the exchange to host. Two teacher sponsors will be accompanying the group from Germany. Below are the profiles of the remaining students.
